Example — November 22, 1988: month 11 kept; day 2+2=4; year 1+9+8+8=26 → 8; if your school keeps 11 in the sum, 11+4+8=23 → 5; other schools reduce month first to 2 and get different totals — pick one school and stay consistent, and note which you used.
Common mistakes: adding every digit of the long date straight through (it works in some traditions but changes results), dropping a year digit typo, and reducing 11/22/33 prematurely. Double-check arithmetic before building meaning on it. When two schools disagree, the reading that maps cleanly onto your lived patterns is the useful one.
